DESCRIZIONE
Our knowledge of myasthenia gravis (MG) has changed dramatically over the last 40 years, as have diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Thanks to the recent development of biologic treatments, we can now offer patients 'disease-modifying' treatments that have been shown to improve quality of life. At the same time, there is a continuous effort to search for new targets and therapeutic strategies, which suggests that our therapeutic options will increase further in the near future.
Immunotherapy of Autoimmune Myasthenia Gravis in the Era of Biologics is a practice-oriented book written by a group of enthusiastic clinicians and internationally recognised scientists who are specialised in neuromuscular disorders, particularly MG. The text is divided into three interconnected parts.
Part 1 provides an overview of MG, reviewing epidemiological, pathophysiological, clinical, diagnostic, and conventional therapeutic aspects to give an insight into the current state of knowledge of the disease in clinical practice.
Part 2 outlines the four primary applications of innovative biological therapies: B-cell depletion; complement cascade inhibition; neonatal Fc receptor blockade; and cytokine interference. In each chapter, the authors describe the objectives of the individual treatments and the characteristics of the clinical trials in which they were tested.
They also report on dosages, routes of administration, and adverse events. Considering that the subject matter of this book is constantly evolving, Part 3 considers new, hypothetical therapies not described in previous chapters, as well as ongoing clinical trials of innovative treatments that could become part of clinical practice in the near future.
