This book was conceived as a comprehensive journey through the menisci anatomy, histology, pathogenesis and treatment. It includes the fundamentals a surgeon needs to correctly understand the meniscal functioning and diagnose its pathology.
It also focuses on the current treatment of all aspects of meniscal pathology and allied conditions. The hottest surgical approaches are presented by a series of experienced authors that clearly described tips and tricks that will make things easier for the casual reader.
In the last decades, the approach to treating meniscal tears has shifted towards prioritizing meniscal preservation over meniscectomy. This "save the meniscus" tactic aims to restore knee biomechanics and potentially delay or prevent osteoarthritis. The current book perfectly aligns with this principle, describing through its pages most of the current knowledge for preserving meniscal tissue. Hence, the book ranges from the most novel surgical repair techniques to the replacement of the lost meniscal tissue.
Although meniscus surgery is generally safe, complications can occur. Meniscus repair, in particular, has a failure rate, with some studies reporting up to 25% of repairs failing within the first six months. Furthermore, meniscectomy, may increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis and so, when needed should be performed with care.
All the existing knowledge concerning these subjects is reviewed and updated as well.
